Satellite Imagery
This satellite imagery shows a representation of tree cover, agricultural land use, urban areas and water resources in Victoria. The land cover features are enhanced to approximate true colour and colour-balanced to achieve a consistent appearance across the state. Forest and tree cover are dark green, irrigated pastures and crops a brighter green, bare soils and dry pasture vary between pink, red and brown and water is blue.
This imagery has been produced by resampling the 30m pixel resolution Landsat 7 data to 300m, has a nominal usage scale of 1:500 000 or smaller and is only suitable as a backdrop for data visualisation and purposes.
The images used to compile Vicmap Imagery - Satellite TM Mosaic 2000 Colour were taken by the Landsat 7 satellite, operated by the United States Geological Survey, which passes over Victoria approximately every 16 days at a height of 705 kms. The satellite is equipped with an Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) sensor which monitors eight bands of the electromagnetic spectrum - three visible light bands, three infrared bands, one thermal radiation band and one panchromatic band - sensitive to both visible and infrared radiation. This broad spectral capability makes the mosaic imagery an extremely flexible and useful product, with each band being fine tuned for a particular purpose - for example detecting vegetation health and vigour by measuring moisture content in vegetation.
The satellite images were carefully selected by searching the Geoscience Australia archives for cloud-free images taken when the sun is directly overhead between December 1999 and April 2000. Images acquired in the summer period have minimum shadow effects and maximum contrast between vegetation cover types, improving the usefulness of the product.
The imagery is not suitable for detailed analysis use, such applications require the higher quality Vicmap Imagery - Satellite data.
The Coordinated Imagery Program (CIP) coordinates the purchase of aerial photography and satellite imagery across Victoria for a range of government and non-government organisations. The program is designed to facilitate all your imagery needs, reduce costs, avoid duplication and to contract manage your project.
