Wildlife Possession & Trade Advisory Committee (WPTAC)

The Wildlife Possession & Trade Advisory Committee (WPTAC) was formed in the early 1990s to provide advice to the Department of Environment and Primary Industries on a range matters relating to wildlife possession and trade in Victoria.

The Committee provides advice to the Executive Director, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (DEPI) on:

  • policy, strategies and programs
  • interaction and partnerships between stakeholders and the Department
  • ways to achieve the objectives of the Wildlife Act 1975 with respect to wildlife possession and trade
  • improvements to the licensing process and overall service delivery to customers
  • any other matters referred by the Department.

The Committee generally meets four times per year (in February, May, August and November), but may meet at other times if required.

Consolidated Wildlife Regulations Project

DEPI will soon commence a review of several sets of wildlife-related Regulations which are due to sunset between 2011 and 2014, and which must be re-made. In doing so, DEPI seeks to develop a single set of consolidated Wildlife Regulations consistent with the Victorian Government’s Regulatory Red-Tape Reduction Initiative.

The Wildlife Possession & Trade Advisory Committee (WPTAC) plays a key role in DEPI’s stakeholder engagement as a source of information for interested persons and as a conduit for input to DEPI’s development of a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS). At this stage, it is anticipated that the RIS will be formally released for public comment during 2012.

Preliminary submissions regarding the existing Wildlife Regulations 2002 may be made to WPTAC using the forms provided below.
