Melbourne’s South - Securing a sustainable environment for the future
The following initiatives will be funded over the next year to kick-start sustainability in the households, local Councils, businesses and industry in Melbourne’s South.
Through Our Environment, Our Future the Victorian Government will:
Provide $2 million to establish at least four permanent Detox Your Home facilities across the State – including in Melbourne’s South. The facilities will provide householders with an easily accessed and convenient disposal point for common domestic chemicals including paint, motor oil, batteries & gas cylinders.
Provide $2 million for “Byteback” facilities across the State, including in Melbourne’s South. These facilities will provide householders with a place to safely dispose of old (and toxic) computer equipment.
Support Landcare by providing funding for a Regional Coordinator in Frankston.
Invest in local projects relevant to Melbourne’s south through the Sustainability Fund:
- $4.2 million over four years to roll out the GreenHome Program across the State. The program is a partnership with the Australian Conservation Foundation, Environment Victoria, the Victorian Government and local Councils. It will help residents make eco-friendly lifestyle choices covering energy, waste, packaging, transport, gardens and water. The program will be rolled out across the State and will be tailored to the needs of the region or suburb.
- $607,500 for City of Casey on behalf of the Western Port Greenhouse Alliance and regional partners to undertake the Western Port Greenhouse Action and Resource Efficiency Project. This project will build on existing programs and regional partnerships to engage educate and support landholders operating large beef and dairy businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and waste landfill.
- $150,000 for CSR Building Products Limited to develop the Rockwool Waste Briquette Plant. This project will enable solid waste generated by the Rockwool manufacturing process to be recycled. The clean waste will then be used in thermal insulation.
- $350,000 for December Films to develop Carbon Cops - Transforming Energy Usage. Carbon Cops is an innovative multi-platform media project that takes a variety of households through a series of steps to highlight energy consumption. It will raise awareness among householders about ways to be more environmentally sustainable.
- $440,000 for Orica Australia to develop a program for elimination of paint solid waste in the Auto Industry.
Invest in Neighbourhood Renewal Project for Melbourne’s South:
- $55,000 to the Doveton-Eumemmerring Neighbourhood Renewal Community and City of Casey for the Eumemmerring Creek Parklands Project. This is a community project that includes planting 16,000 indigenous trees and shrubs, constructing fencing, improving river health and quality, developing a eucalyptus arboretum, entrance nodes and a public art display.
