Melbourne’s North - Securing a sustainable environment for the future
The following initiatives will be funded to boost sustainability in the households, local Councils, businesses and industry in Melbourne’s North.
Through Our Environment, Our Future the Victorian Government will:
Invest $3 million to upgrade Victoria’s air quality monitoring network in the Northern suburbs.
Create more parks. Melbourne’s North will share in funding of $10.4 million over 4 years to a park in Craigieburn.
Provide $2 million for “Byteback” facilities across the State, including in Melbourne’s North. These facilities will provide householders with a place to safely dispose of old (and toxic) computer equipment.
Invest in local projects relevant to Melbourne’s North through the Sustainability Fund. These projects are:
- $50,000 for Nillumbik Shire Council to evaluate Nillumbik Kerbside Organic Recycling Contamination Reduction.
- $55,000 to Nillumbik Shire Council to development a Masterplan for Edendale Farm Community Environment Centre that aligns with the Learning to Live Sustainably program.
- $5,000 for St Vincent De Paul in Fitzroy to reduce landfill by using green bags in lieu of plastic. The organisation provides approx 130 food and clothing parcels each week in plastic bags. This project will enable parcels to be provided in re-usable bags.
- $330,139 for Darebin City Council to develop a Sustainable Homes Program that will focus on low-cost, practical measures that will reduce energy use, water consumption and waste.
- $125,360 for Darebin City Council to implement Community Power 6000 Plus which aims to increase the uptake of Community Power Energy Plans. Project activities raise awareness of green power and energy efficiency and help achieve behaviour change through education. The project aims to achieve greenhouse savings of 40,700 tonnes per year and water savings of 6000kl of water per year.
- $143,000 for Darebin City Council and the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA) to create a 2006-09 Public Lighting Action Program. This involves nine local Councils: Banyule, Hume, Manningham, Melbourne, Nillumbik, Whittlesea, Moreland, Darebin and Yarra. This project will help local government deliver large-scale public lighting improvements in Melbourne’s North.
- $250,000 for Brotherhood of St Laurence to undertake Phoenix Ridge Project Stage #4 Metropolitan Expansion. The project is a fridge repair and recycling scheme that promotes the use of energy efficient fridges and removes and recycles inefficient and unwanted fridges.
- $184,545 for Fresh Green Clean to undertake the SASI-Cleaning Project (Safe and Sustainable Indoor Cleaning Project). This project will assist with the implementation of 'green' cleaning products and practices in childcare centres.
- $350,000 for Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd (MEFL) to implement Take Action on Electric Hot Water and Air-Conditioning. Air-conditioning and electric hot water are two significant inefficient uses of energy in the home. This project will look at practical ways to reduce the greenhouse gases they emit.
Investing in Local Government Sustainability Accord project for Melbourne’s North:
- $88,000 for Moreland City Council in partnership with City of Port Phillip and Darebin City Council to evaluate approaches to and share information on sustainability assessment in the Councils’ planning system.
