Melbourne’s East - Securing a sustainable environment for the future
The following initiatives will be funded to boost sustainability in the households, local Councils, businesses and industry in Melbourne’s East.
Through Our Environment, Our Future the Victorian Government will:
Improve take-back and recycling for priority products including electronic and electrical goods, household chemicals and paint tins. Goods will be taken apart, useable resources will be recycled and the residual waste safely disposed of. This will include $2 million to establish at least four permanent Detox Your Home facilities across the State – including in Melbourne’s East. The facilities will provide householders with a convenient disposal point for common domestic chemicals including paint, motor oil, batteries & gas cylinders.
Invest $10 million to develop the National Centre for Sustainability, Environmental Design and Land Management at TAFE’s Wantirna campus. The centre will cater for up to 850 fulltime students and will focus on skills development in sustainable land management and design. The centre will also provide opportunities for the rest of the State through partnerships with regional TAFE institutions.
Invest in local projects relevant to Melbourne’s East through the Sustainability Fund. These projects are:
- $195,000 for Boroondara City Council to undertake Living for our Future - fostering sustainable resource use at home. This program assists residents to make decisions and changes to reduce their environmental impact as well as leading a healthier lifestyle.
- $147,000 for Sustainable Gardening Australia to develop Sustainable Gardener Certification: A Pathway to Sustainability for the Landscape Industry. This certificate will give garden designers, landscape gardeners, maintenance and public garden staff the opportunity to receive training and qualifications that will help them implement environmental best practice guidelines in garden design, installation and maintenance.
- $30,000 for Yarra Ranges Shire Council to implement the Lilydale-Healsville Sustainable Rail Project (The Green Rail). This project is a detailed study into the creation of a solar-powered ultra light rail that will improve access to the Yarra Valley for residents and tourists. The rail will connect the towns of Lilydale, Coldstream and Healesville.
