Prescribed Burning
STATEWIDE OVERVIEW
The Department of Sustainability and Environment will continue its program of planned burning across Victoria when weather conditions are most suitable.

Planned burns are for fuel reduction, ecological and/or regeneration purposes, and are managed in close consultation with local communities, the Bureau of Meteorology and the CFA.

Burns will continue to be patrolled until safe.

When burning is undertaken, we understand that people may be concerned about seeing and smelling smoke in the air again following the summer fires. We ask for the community’s patience while we carry out these burns.

DSE and CFA advise that although conditions may be suitable on public land, this does not mean it is safe to conduct burns on private land. Residents are advised to contact their regional CFA office for information on burning on private land.

Each year the Department, as part of a comprehensive approach to bushfire risk management, identifies proposed strategic burning operations for fuel hazard reduction and biodiversity related purposes.

Proposed burns are assessed for strategic values and environmental and operational requirements before inclusion in the annual fire operations plans. These plans are developed each year, between June and September in conjunction with local CFA brigades, park and forest user groups and the wider community.

The Statewide prescribed burning program is subject to appropriate weather and fuel conditions enabling safe and effective operations. The Spring season involves a number of smaller burns associated with township, private property and asset protection. The majority of prescribed burning is carried out in the Autumn when large area operations in parks and forests can be safely conducted.

Part complete or burns not able to be ignited in this financial year may be rescheduled to the following year.

  Term   Definitions
Ready Burn plan and the preparation for the burn have been completed. Burn may commence when weather and fuel conditions are suitable
Authorisation Required A ready burn is waiting for approval for ignition, likely to occur in the next few days.
Ignition Authorised The burn plan has been approved for ignition, likely in the next few days, subject to weather and resources. This approval is a final check that it is appropriate and safe to conduct the burn.
Ignition The burn has been ignited (in whole or part depending on burn size and/or situation). There is active fire within the burn area.
Under Control - 1 The complete perimeter of the burn is secured. Continuous patrol and blacking out work is required.
Under Control - 2 The complete perimeter of the fire is secured. Only routine patrol and occasional mopping up work is required.
