Fire Operations Plans - Approved
Each year, DSE prepares Fire Operations Plans for Victoria’s public land, including parks, forests and reserves. These plans show where we intend to do fire prevention and preparedness works such as:
- planned burning;
- slashing, mowing and clearing activities;
- works to create and maintain fuel breaks; and
- fire infrastructure maintenance.
Fire Operations Plans contain three years of prevention and preparedness planning which is reviewed annually and updated with the latest information and research. The plans remain current until new plans are approved.
The Fire Operations Plans for 2011/12-2013/14 have been finalised following a formal public consultation period during August 2011.

Statewide summary of planned burning
The Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission recommended an increase in planned burning to help reduce the bushfire risk to lives and properties.
In 2010/11 around 189,000 hectares of park and forest were burnt in planned burns in Victoria to help provide protection from severe and damaging bushfires or for ecological and regeneration purposes. The planned burning program for 2011/12 is 225,000 hectares.
Please note that the information on this page relates to the Fire Operations Plans approved in 2011 for the period 2011/12 to 2013/14. The plans are reviewed on an annual basis.
The "planned areas" shown in the table below are for planning purposes only. These are not regional planning delivery targets. A larger planning target than delivery target can provide greater flexibility when responding to seasonal conditions.

Quick guide to using Interactive Map
- Click on the 'Find Location' tab above the map, select 'Place Name', type a specific location then click 'OK'
- Use the 'Zoom In' and 'Zoom Out' and 'Pan' functions to navigate to your local area on the map.
- The name of each DSE fire district and its border appear in red on the map - view office contacts for every DSE fire district. Or contact the DSE Customer Service Centre on 136 186 to find out your DSE fire district.
- View different information by adding or subtracting 'Layers' using the 'Layers' tab above the map.
- To see burns that have already occurred, click ‘Layers’ tab. On right hand side, click in box beside ‘Fire History’ then click ‘Refresh Map’. Grey areas appear on the map - these are previous DSE planned burns. Past bushfires are also shown. Each shaded area has a label that states if it was a burn or a bushfire and the year it occurred.
- See other burns for a district by panning across the map (use the 'hand' symbol - third from left). Or zoom out using 'magnifying glass' symbol - second from left.
- Please note - burns will only be visible if map scale is less than 1:500,000. If you zoom out too far, you can no longer see burns.

- To view details about any burn click on ‘Identify all visible layers’ button (6th symbol from left). Click on a purple burn area on the map. A strip of information appears to right of map - this includes location of that burn, name, size in hectares, year and season the burn is planned for and the main purpose of the burn (e.g. fuel reduction, ecological).
