Healthy Rivers, Healthy Communities & Regional Growth - Victorian River Health Strategy
The Victorian Government is committed to protecting and restoring our rivers and catchments and safeguarding the regional economies that are dependent on them.
The Victorian River Health Strategy (VRHS) outlines the Government’s long-term direction for the management of Victoria’s rivers. It provides a clear vision for the management of rivers in Victoria, comprehensive policy direction on issues affecting river health and most importantly, a blueprint for integrating all our efforts on rivers and for ensuring that we get the most effective river health benefits for the effort and resources invested.
The VRHS provides the framework for regional communities to make decisions on river protection and restoration and to find the balance between using our rivers and maintaining their ecological condition. It has been developed in close consultation with key stakeholder groups.
A draft VRHS was released for a period of public review between 1 March 2002 and 17 May 2002. The aim of the consultation process was to gain broad support for the VRHS across Victoria and to allow the community to highlight issues that may have been overlooked. Forty-five formal submissions have been received during this process and are published here. As well, a number of informal and within-Government submissions were received. These submissions contributed to the final strategy which was released on 9 August 2002.
