Now in their fourth year, the Premier’s Business Sustainability Awards are the search for companies that are working to reduce their impact on the environment.
It’s about recognising innovation. Rewarding leadership. And demonstrating that the principles of sustainability can help drive productivity.
2005 Winners
Print Bound, Cheetham Salt and Western Water have won the 2005 Premier’s Business Sustainability Awards for integrating sustainability principles into all aspects of their businesses.
The Awards were announced by Victorian Premier Steve Bracks on 10 November 2005 in Melbourne.
Winner - Small Business category
Print Bound won the 2005 Award in the small business category, for its leading work in the print industry to minimise environmental impacts.
It has reduced its energy consumption by 40 per cent, reduced use of air polluting chemicals, and replaced 80 per cent of its ink tins with recyclable cartons.
Print Bound has also invested significant time into educating its clients and staff about environmentally sustainable practices.
Winner – Large Business category
Cheetham Salt won the Premier’s Business Sustainability Award for the large business category for its industry breakthrough in recycling ‘hide salt’.
Cheetham Salt is Australia’s largest producer and refiner of salt, and provides salt for curing animal hides.
Working with the CSIRO and industry experts, it has developed a system to purify used ‘hide salt’, and enable its reuse.
3000 tonnes of the used salt that previously went to landfill is now being recycled.
The solution has been a breakthrough for the sector, and is cutting costs and providing environmental benefits.
Winner – Public Sector category
Western Water won the Premier’s Business Sustainability Award for the public sector category.
Western Water provides water and sewerage to an area of around 3000 square kilometres.
In 2001, it set a target to recycle all water and treated sewage by December 2006 – a first for Victorian water businesses.
It has since lifted its recycling rate from 61 per cent in 2001/02 to 88 per cent in 2004/05 - an increase of 27 per cent. This improvement allowed 519 million litres of potable water to be saved in 2004/05, by substitution with recycled water.

Award partners
In 2005, the Premier’s Awards enjoyed a continuing partnership with the Banksia Environmental Foundation, which oversees the independent judging of the Awards.
The Awards program also welcomed two new partners - the Australian Industry Group and the Municipal Association of Victoria – who have supported the Victorian Government in recognising the sustainability achievements of organisations across the state.
What is sustainability?
For businesses, becoming more sustainable means finding news ways of operating – ways to achieve the same outcome with fewer natural resources and less impact on
Using less electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and recycling materials formerly seen as ‘waste’ are all ways to become more sustainable, and make sure we don’t leave the cupboard bare for future generations.
