Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership
Introducing the Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership: a new phase for the Accord
The Victorian Government is committed to its partnership with local government. The Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership is the new name for established partnership between Victoria’s 79 councils and the State Government, previously the Victorian Local Sustainability Accord. The Accord has helped the State Government and local governments work together on environmental issues that affect all Victorians. It has raised the priority of sustainability and climate change within councils and prompted on-ground local action.
As we look to the future, the Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership is a real opportunity to build on the Accord and support local governments and their communities to take environmental action.
With a new name and a new ministerial committee to guide the way, the Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership will focus on supporting councils to work with their communities to become more sustainable and resilient to climate change.
Moving forward with action on sustainability and climate change
Victorian councils and state government have identified climate change adaptation as a crucial current or emerging issue needing to be addressed. Consultations with councils in mid 2012 and the recommendations from the Victorian Local Sustainability Advisory Committee end of term achievements report highlighted this and other priority environmental and sustainability areas for local and state government to continue to tackle in the coming years.
With work already underway on other shared priority areas like waste policy and native vegetation management, the State and local governments are well placed to work together in areas that complement, not duplicate this work through the partnership.
A new committee for the next stage of partnership
Membership of the current ministerial advisory Committee ended in October 2012, in line with the local government elections. The first step in establishing the next phase of the partnership is to establish the new ministerial advisory committee.
Expressions of interest for positions within the ministerial advisory committee are now open.
A ministerial advisory committee appointed by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, will oversee the partnership. The committee also provides advice to the Minister and acts as a conduit between State and local government on climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability issues.
The Municipal Association of the Victoria, Victorian Local Governance Association and Local Government Professionals are partners to the Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership along with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Department of Planning and Community Development, and will be represented on the committee.
