Climate Change

The Earth's climate has changed over the last century and there is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed in the last 50 years is due to human activities.

In Victoria, this is likely to mean a warmer and drier future, with the increasing likelihood of more extreme events such as heatwaves, bushfires and storm surges.

The Victorian Government is committed to action that will protect our environment, promote sustainable living and support our economy. It is vitally important that we protect our planet and strive to prevent irreversible damage.

The Climate Change Act

The Climate Change Act 2010 came into effect on 1 July 2011.

The Climate Change Act creates a legal framework for key actions and initiatives in responding to climate change in Victoria.

Understanding Climate Change: Victoria’s climate change website

Understanding Climate Change is Victoria’s dedicated website to help Victorians find out more about climate change science and learn about adapting to the impacts of climate change.

Understanding Climate Change explains the latest in science information and knowledge and provides a range of data for Victoria, including greenhouse gas emissions and how the climate in each region of Victoria might change in the future.

The website also shows how Victorians are responding to climate change, including the Future Coasts Program which produces information about the impact of sea level rise on the Victorian coast.
