Marine Energy in Victoria

The Victorian government is committed to enabling development of new renewable energy industries and sustainably managing the state’s marine and coastal environments.

What is marine energy?

Marine energy is any form of renewable energy that is generated through use of the marine environment. Once captured, the energy can be converted into electricity.

The main types of marine energy include:
  • wave energy generated from the motion of surface ocean waves or below-surface pressure
  • tidal energy from naturally occurring tidal currents
  • offshore wind from turbines in coastal areas
  • ocean thermal from the temperature difference between deep and shallow waters.
Marine Energy
Victoria has important coastal and marine environments. While these natural assets hold potential for harnessing marine energy, they are also used for other social and economic activities. It is important to preserve the environmental, social, cultural and economic values and services linked to coastal and marine environments.

Marine energy projects have potential impacts that, given the infancy of the industry, are not yet fully understood.
