30 December, 2011

Snorkelling, kayaking, kite making and a rockpool ramble are just some of the free activities people can take part in along Victoria’s coast this summer.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment’s (DSE) annual Summer by the Sea festival is underway from the 2nd until the 22nd of January with hundreds of coastal activities on offer for the community to enjoy.

DSE Coastcare Coordinator Victoria Guess said whether you live on the coast or are coming to the coast for a holiday this summer, there are a diverse range of activities.

“And better yet, they are all free! The festival provides fun for all family members, but also raises awareness of coastal and marine issues,” Ms Guess said.

“Even the four-legged family members can get involved with a number of dog’s breakfast’s being held to help dogs and more importantly their owners, learn about the wildlife living on Victoria’s beaches and how to protect them when they go for a walk.

“There will be 300 events spanning Victoria’s coastline over 21 days and there’s something to suit everyone.”

The events around Port Phillip Bay include:

· Dog’s Breakfast (free breakfast for dogs & their owners) Beach Road, Altona -0830 on Saturday 7/1/12

· Sea Shell Safari at Point Gellibrand (meet at Timeball Tower) Williamstown -1045 on Saturday 14/1/12

“From Bridgewater in the west to Bemm River in the east and beyond, our beautiful coast is open to explore both underwater and above ground. People are also given the opportunity to learn from local experts about the coastal environment about understanding and conserving the natural wonders of our spectacular coastline.”

The Summer by the Sea festival is run by DSE’s Coastcare program, with the support of volunteers and local experts. Coastcare Victoria provides support and education to community groups and individuals carrying out coastal protection work.

Summer by the Sea is part of Coastcare Victoria’s Strategy for 2011-15, which aims to help manage and protect Victoria’s coast through engaging with volunteers, building capacity and encouraging participation.
