Developing an Engagement Plan

Including an explicit community engagement component within your overall project can sometimes be the difference between project success or failure. How you approach the development of an Engagement Plan for your project will be dependent upon the size of the project, the level of complexity and the number of staff involved.

For medium to large projects, it is recommended that you treat community engagement as a separate, discrete project component. Accordingly, we recommend you develop a specific Engagement Plan for working with the various project stakeholders.

In the following pages, we address some of the broader considerations in planning and managing effective engagement, and explore a model for matching the type of engagement to your purpose.

You can also download the Effective Engagement Planning Tool to create your Engagement Plan electronically.

*DSE staff can arrange for a Project Office facilitator to run a scoping workshop to help develop the engagement component of their overall project implementation plan.
