Victoria's survey infrastructure

Surveyor-General Victoria (SGV) is responsible for Victoria’s Geodetic Survey Control Network.

This is the infrastructure used to provide accurate position and height referencing across Victoria.

Information in the network is used to guide construction, gather environmental data, position assets, monitor changes in land use and structures and reference property boundaries.

It is made up of 140,000 ground marks, GPS base stations and the Survey Marks Enquiry Service (SMES).

Ground marks are physical reference marks in the ground and include brass plaques, rivets, nails in concrete and etches.

SMES is an online database of Victoria’s 140,000 ground marks. You can search for the state’s current coordinate and height information, look up sketch plans for the ground marks and view interactive maps and reports for all the marks.
