Plans and surveys

There are many types of plans that you can search for online or in person.

The Land Information Centre in Melbourne holds Crown survey plans, county, parish and township plans, charts, plans of subdivision and consolidation and surveyors’ plans and field notes. These documents are available in digital or microfiche format.

This information can also be found at the department’s regional information centres in Ballarat and Bendigo.

Historical survey plans and field notes from other agencies are also held at the Land Information Centre, including Forests Commission and Rural Water Commission information.

You can view plans online however you will need to visit the Land Information Centre to access county, parish and township plans, and surveyors’ plans and field notes.

Commonly searched plans include parish plans, plans of subdivision and survey plans.

Parish plans define the position and dimensions of all Crown allotments within a parish. You can search and view parish plans and copy them (for a fee) at the Land Information Centre or at the department’s regional information centres in Ballarat and Bendigo.

Plans of subdivision depict the break-up of a piece of land, showing parcels of land (commonly called lots) that can be sold separately.

If you know the plan of subdivision number (for example PS516128W), you can easily search for a plan online through the Titles and Property Certificates service or by visiting the Land Information Centre where you can search, view and print plans of subdivisions (for a fee).

If you do not know the plan of subdivision number, you may first have to do a title search, or locate the land you are interested in using interactive map to find the number.

Survey plans and abstracts of field records are certified by licensed surveyors and show a summary of information used by a surveyor to establish the title boundaries and dimensions of a piece of land.

These plans commonly show reference marks, building boundaries, fencing and measurement notations. Copies of survey plans and abstracts of field records dating from 1854 to today are available for viewing and copying (for a fee) at the Land Information Centre. You can print screen views at A3 size.
