About PLANET

PLANET (PLAnning NETwork) is now in its sixth year as the professional development and training program specifically designed for users of Victoria's planning system.

The program delivers training topics relevant to all new and specialist planners. We are also striving to develop new programs that relate to changes in the planning system or programs that provide information on how planning matters are handled or administered by different planning authorities.

Courses for new planning assistants are our new focus to compliment existing programs. These new graduates of the Certificate IV in Local Government (Planning) play a valuable role in the planning process and their contribution is being recognised by many councils.

PLANET objectives

  • Improve practitioner skills by providing training in planning system skills
  • Provide additional training opportunities for practising planners where this is a skill gap and address new issues with advanced skills
  • Promote "best practice" in the operation and effectiveness of the planning system
  • Identify areas for skill enhancement and facilitate training requirements

Planning Institute of Australia PD system
All PLANET programs are endorsed by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), Victorian Division as part of an approved Professional Development (PD) program. These PD points have been allocated on all programs. PIA is taking on a greater role in the provision of approved training programs.

In July 2006 PIA introduced the Certified Practising Planner (CPP) program across Australia. At the same time professional development for all PIA corporate members became mandatory. This means, that to ensure continuing membership, planners will need to keep track of their PD points. CPPs are required to achieve at least 60 PD points over a consecutive two-year period, with a minimum of 20 points each year. Please refer to the PIA website for information.
