Ballarat: Transit Cities Program

Transit Cities is a major Victorian Government program aimed at creating opportunities for people to live and work in the same area - reducing the need to commute and increase time spent with family and friends.

About Ballarat

Ballarat is an important location because it is:
  • Victoria’s second largest regional centre
  • a major regional provider of employment for the manufacturing, tourism, agricultural, health and community services, education and retail sectors
  • in a key strategic position at the centre of some of Victoria’s most important freight, tourist and commuter transport routes
  • located in an important regional growth corridor identified in Melbourne 2030 and serviced by the Regional Fast Rail link
  • increasing in importance as a ‘knowledge' centre within Victoria due to growth in the information technology sector and the role of local tertiary institutions.
Ballarat Transit City projects

Transit City projects in Ballarat will focus on improving access, facilities and amenities in and around the Ballarat Central Station.

A second railway station will also be built in Ballarat as part of $11 million in rail upgrades for the city. The second station, to be located at Gillies St, Wendouree, will service growing rail patronage, ease car parking issues at the existing station and provide better transport links to the west of Ballarat. A contract for the construction of the new station has been awarded to Cut and Fill Pty Ltd and early works have commenced to prepare the site. More information is available from the Department of Transport web page.

Other key projects include:
  • a $2.6 million renovation of the Ballarat Station Train Hall (opened in March 2006)
  • further improvements and upgrades to facilities at the Ballarat Central Station
  • improvements to the surrounding area and the creation of better links to the Ballarat central activity centre, providing opportunities for mixed use development in the area.
More information is available from the Ballarat Transit City contact.
