Sydenham: Transit Cities Program

Transit Cities is a major Victorian Government program that will create opportunities for people to live and work in the same area - reducing the need to commute and increase time spent with family and friends.

About Sydenham
Sydenham, a fast growing suburb in Melbourne’s outer west, is a key location and has the potential to become a vibrant, mixed use area with local employment opportunities. Sydenham features:
  • Watergardens Shopping Centre
  • Watergardens Railway Station
  • Calder Park Raceway

    Recent major developments include:
  • Expansion of Watergardens Shopping Centre, incorporating new cinemas and retail shops (under construction)
  • A new main street linking the shopping centre with Watergardens Railway Station (under construction)
  • Plans for a series of pedestrian and open space improvements
  • Plans for streetscape improvements
  • Plans for a substantial mixed-use town centre
  • Opening of the Sydenham Library in December 2006. The library is located opposite the Watergardens Train Station on the corner of Watergardens Circuit and Station Street.

    Sydenham Transit City projects
The Sydenham Transit City site is near Watergardens Shopping Centre and the Watergardens Railway Station. About 50 hectares of vacant land can be used for mixed-use development.

The owner of Watergardens shopping complex, Queensland Investment Corporation, is creating a new town centre for Sydenham. This 25,000 square metre development will bridge the gap between the shopping complex and railway station. Features include improvements to the Taylors Creek area, creation of a main street with shops and cafes, and a new learning centre. Building commenced in 2006.

A Master Plan is being prepared and will identify commercial and residential development options and consider transport and pedestrian access issues in the new town centre.
