New residential zones for Victoria
The Minister for Planning has initiated a review of the residential zones as part of a five point priority action plan for Making local planning policy stronger. The aim of the review is to make the residential zones more certain, more locally responsive and more user friendly.
The review is assisted by an expert group that includes local government planners and the Municipal Association of Victoria.

Discussion paper
'New residential zones for Victoria - a discussion paper' outlines proposals for the new zones and prompts discussion and feedback to assist the development of draft new zones for further public consultation.
Public submissions
The first public consultation phase for comments on the concepts for the proposed new zones has concluded.
Next steps
The responses to the discussion paper will inform the preparation of final detailed draft zones which are expected to be made available for further comment in mid-2008.
It is anticipated that the Minister for Planning will appoint an advisory committee to review the draft new zones and submissions. The advisory committee will then provide recommendations on the final form of the new residential zones and how they should be implemented.
Background
The Making local policy stronger report recommended to the Minister for Planning that many local planning provisions would be more effective if implemented through more locally responsive zones and overlays. The working group particularly noted that the current residential zones do not effectively reflect the strategic objectives of most local housing strategies.
The Government has accepted the recommendations of the expert working group and released an action plan in response to the report. Preparing new residential zones is the first action of this plan.
