The Glenelg Ark project is now in its fifth year, having begun in July 2004.
Glenelg Ark aims to substantially reduce fox numbers across 100 000 ha of State forest and National Park in the far south-west of Victoria. With reduced levels of fox predation an increase in native wildlife populations is expected.
Foxes are controlled through a year round baiting program using buried baits.
A significant component of Glenelg Ark is the monitoring and evaluation of the project. This is done through:
- measuring fox activity using sand pad monitoring and bait-take
- measuring wildlife activity at over 200 site spread throughout the project area using hairtube survey methods
Whilst the project should benefit a range of native species (small mammals, birds and reptiles), monitoring is focussing on three target species:
- long-nosed potoroo
- southern brown bandicoot
- common brush-tail possum
A similar initiative, Southern Ark, is being undertaken in far East Gippsland.
