The Weeds and Pests on Public Land (including National Parks) Initiative 2003 - 2007

Initiatives Home

The Weeds and Pests on Public Land Initiative (2004-2007) was a $14 million, four-year Victorian Government initiative to undertake major weed and pest animal control programs in National Parks, State Forest and other public land in Victoria. The Weeds and Pests on Public Land Initiative was one of Victoria's largest ever initiatives to reduce the impact of weeds and pest animals on public land.

The Weeds and Pests on Public Land Initiative aimed to:
  • Protect large areas of high value natural assets through preventing and reducing the impact of weeds and pests
  • Improve public land stewardship through a collaborative partnership approach at the landscape level
  • Minimise the movement of weeds and pests across the public/private land interface
  • Engage the community in the management of public lands.
The Initiative provided for investment in 3 key areas:
  • On ground control projects
The development of major on-ground weed and pest animal control projects for the protection of biodiversity. 11 key projects across Victoria were funded through the Initiative.
  • Strategic approaches to pest management
The Otway region of Victoria was selected for a case study to pilot and evaluate an innovative approach to regional priority setting.
  • Good Neighbour
An increased commitment to Good Neighbour principles through an extension of DSE’s Good Neighbour Program.

Otways’ Case Study

To assist public land managers and others consider how the threat of weeds affects the values they aim to protect, a new decision-support framework was developed (see Guidelines above). The Angahook-Otway region of Victoria was selected for a case study to pilot and evaluate the framework. This region is the focus of a major on-ground, multiple tenure weed project involving collaboration between public land managers.

Monitoring Biodiversity for changes associated with invasive plants

Understanding the outcomes of weed management for environmental, social and economic values is fundamental to managing weed risk. This report sets out the need for monitoring of weed effects on biodiversity, reviews existing monitoring schemes, and outlines issues to be considered in designing a monitoring protocol.
