Management Framework
The Department of Sustainability and Environment uses a range of management tools to balance the many uses and values of Victoria's forests, including sustainable timber and water production, biodiversity conservation, recreation and tourism. These tools ensure compliance with Victoria's policy and legislation framework.
| Environmental Management System A system of policies, objectives, controls and reporting mechanisms that ensures that forest and fire operational activities comply with the law and minimise negative environmental impacts. | |
| Code of Practice for Timber Production A key instrument for regulating commercial timber production in both public and private forests and plantations in Victoria. | |
| Management Procedures for Timber Harvesting Operations and Associated Activities in Victoria's State Forests These procedures specify environmental and operational requirements additional to the requirements of the Code of Practice for Timber Production. | |
| Timber harvesting compliance in Victoria's State forests In 2009, DSE is developing an improved auditing program for commercial timber harvesting in Victoria's State forests. | |
| Fire Salvage Harvesting Prescriptions Requirements for major salvage operations in fire affected areas. | |
| Victoria's Firewood Strategy for Public Land The Victorian Government is developing a statewide strategy to ensure firewood collection from public land is sustainable into the future. | |
| Forest Management Plans Strategic plans containing the principles and actions for the management of State forests in Victoria. | |
| Forest Management Zones Zoning decisions define specific management priorities and permitted uses for different parts of State forests. | |
| Allocation Order Describes the timber resources available to VicForests over a 15 year period, and is reviewed every 5 years. | |
| Timber Release Plans Operational plans that set out specific details of proposed harvesting operations in State forest. | |
| Wood Utilisation Plans Wood Utilisation Plans (WUPs) detail the location, nature and approximate timing of timber harvesting. WUPs include the location of associated access roads and a plan for the allocation of wood to processors. | |
| Monitoring Annual Harvest Performance Reporting process to assess whether commercial timber production in State forests is undertaken on a sustainable basis. |
