Fire ecology information for people in fire affected areas
Helping biodiversity recover from a bushfire
Most plants and animals will recover naturally after a bushfire. Residents and land managers can help the recovery by observing and reporting any issues relating to:
- The effects of sedimentation of streams on aquatic fauna
- Predation of native fauna, especially any populations that are at particular risk
- Browsing or other damage to rare or threatened plants
- Weed invasion
If any of the above issues are observed on public land please contact DSE on 136 186, or in national parks and reserves please contact Parks Victoria on 131 963.
To assist recovery you can:
- Keep your pets secured
- Avoid disturbing habitats such as through removal of burnt logs that provide habitat
- Avoid soil disturbance, particularly whilst seedlings are establishing
- Avoid introduction of weeds (e.g. in contaminated hay or soil)

Please remember that recently burnt areas can be hazardous. Care should always be taken in fire affected areas and signs observed.
