Coasts

The Department of Sustainability and Environment is responsible for managing 96% of public land on the coast and its marine waters, for this and future generations.

We delegate our management responsibility to Parks Victoria, local committees of management and coastal local governments. We also fund a number of coastal and marine projects including the Coast Action/Coastcare community coastal conservation program and the operation of the state's 13 local ports.

In 2008, the Victorian Coastal Strategy was launched by Gavin Jennings, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, and Justin Madden, Minister for Planning. The strategy is the state government’s policy commitment for coastal, estuarine and marine environments in Victoria. It provides a long-term vision for the planning, management and sustainable use of our coast, and the policies and actions Victorians will need to implement over the next five years to help achieve that vision.
