Including Biodiversity in Property Management Planning

The Living Systems Project, which concluded in 2002, aimed to help farm families and private agribusiness benefit from the contribution native biodiversity can make towards the ecological sustainability of their farm business and lifestyle.

Living Systems consisted of three sub-projects:

The Education and Training Sub-Project aimed to assist educators and facilitators to include native biodiversity in their training programs including those aimed at agribusiness and natural resource management.

The Industry Support Sub-Project aimed to understand how native biodiversity can contribute to agribusiness.

The Community Planning Sub-Project aimed to assist local communities to include native biodiversity in their landscape plans. This project was based in the Goldfields Bioregion (Bendigo).

Publications:

Living Systems Resource Kit - Resources to assist agricultural industry training providers and educators to explain how native biodiversity, in all its facets, can make a positive contribution to agriculture, to farm families and rural communities. Available online (also published as a 'Booklet and CD' format - no longer available but may be held by local libraries or resource centres).

Green Pages - Originally published as a credit-card sized guide to organisations able to provide support and assistance on conserving native biodiversity to private landholders. Refer to the 'Organisations and Contacts' section of the Living Systems Resource Kit.

'How to plan wildlife landscapes: a guide for community organisations' aims to help community organisations and interested individuals understand the principles for conserving wildlife at a landscape scale, such as a neighbourhood or sub-catchment. 64 pages.

'Biodiversity Action planning: action planning for native biodiversity at multiple scales - catchment, bioregional, landscape, local' supports the implementation of Biodiversity Action Planning.

Living Systems was jointly funded by the National Landcare Program, a program funded under the National Heritage Trust, and the Department of Sustainability and Environment.
