Nationally Important Wetlands

The third edition of the Directory of Important Wetlands in Australia describes 159 nationally important wetlands for Victoria.

These include a range of wetland types in all but one of Victoria's bioregions.

Important natural wetlands in the Directory include alpine peatlands, riverine swamps and lakes, lakes of volcanic origin, saltmarshes and estuaries.

Important human-made wetlands include current and former saltworks near Melbourne and Geelong, sewage treatment plants servicing Melbourne and large water storages.
