Resource efficiency | Towards Zero Waste | Strategic Plan | VARRI
Key initiatives
- Towards Zero Waste Strategy - establishes the goals and directions for Victoria's solid waste management and resource recovery framework.
- Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Strategic Plan - the long term vision for the management and reduction of waste in metropolitan Melbourne and short and long term waste infrastructure and landfill needs.
- VARRI - The Victorian Advanced Resource Recovery Initiative is aiming to improve organic waste recycling through by facilitating the establishment of new waste processing facilities for metropolitan Melbourne.
Why Waste Management?
Victoria creates around 9.9 million tonnes of solid waste a year of which less than half goes to landfill. Although Victorians are recycling more waste than ever before, waste levels still need to be reduced to remove environmental pressures and decrease the costs to business and communities.
Victoria’s Environmental Sustainability Framework establishes three directions, which Victoria must pursue in moving towards becoming a sustainable state. These are:
- Maintaining and restoring our natural assets
- Using our resources more efficiently
- Reducing our everyday environmental impacts.
