Why Waste Management?

Victoria creates around 9.9 million tonnes of solid waste a year of which less than half goes to landfill. Although Victorians are recycling more waste than ever before, waste levels still need to be reduced to remove environmental pressures and decrease the costs to business and communities.

Victoria’s Environmental Sustainability Framework establishes three directions, which Victoria must pursue in moving towards becoming a sustainable state. These are: Towards Zero Waste is a key strategy of the Victorian government to drive improved resource efficiency. Towards Zero Waste covers all aspects of solid waste management in Victoria, ranging from households to businesses and schools.
