The Department of Sustainability and Environment, in collaboration with the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) have been working together to implement an EcoTender demonstration in the Corangamite CMA region. This demonstration will support local landholders who, through changed land use on their property will provide a range of enhanced environmental outcomes.
This is the first demonstration applied as part of the ecoMarkets initiative, funded under the Victorian Government’s Our Environment Our Future Environmental Sustainability Action Statement. The Victorian Goverment is investing $14 million over four years to design and test efficient market systems to achieve the improved environmental benefits.
A second EcoTender demonstration has just been announced and will occur in the Port Philip and Westernport catchment area. For more information on this future demonstration, please visit the Port Philip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (CMA) EcoTender Demonstration 08/09 page.
EcoTender in the Corangamite catchment
For several years, Victoria has been at the fore-front in the development and implementation of tender-based approaches that aim to deliver improved environmental outcomes. EcoTender builds on the success of other ecoMarkets approaches such as BushTender which has received strong support from participating landholders and the broader Victorian community.
This particular EcoTender demonstration project is targeting improved native vegetation management and revegetation on private land in the Bellarine, Hovells, Mid Barwon, Moorabool and Thompsons landscape zones, as identified by the Corangamite CMA (see Figure 1 below).

Within the demonstration area, there is $1.5 million available for landholder payments. Funds will be allocated shortly to successful landholders on the basis of ‘best value for money’ to the community in accordance with the proposed landholder management actions, future changes in ecosystem health, as well as the significance of the natural assets on their property affected by these changes, all taken in conjunction with the price of the landholder bid.
After a very positive response from landholders in the early part of 2008, expressions of interest for the Corangamite CMA EcoTender Demonstration 2007/08 have now officially closed. The high level of interest has meant that site assessments will need to continue into mid 2008.
Bids assessments will be undertaken shortly and the successful EcoTender bidders will be notified soon after that.
Successful landholders will receive periodic payments for their management actions under agreements signed with the Corangamite CMA.
