Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site

The Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site is located 300 kilometres from Melbourne south of the Eastern Highlands and to the east of the La Trobe valley. It is the largest estuarine lagoon system in Australia.

This site was chosen for its significant carrying capacity of waterbird species.

Features of the Gippsland Lakes Ramsar Site include:
  • More than 540 plant species and 300 native animal species including five endangered species.
  • Supports species included in the Japan-Australia Migratory Birds Agreement (JAMBA) and the China-Australia Migratory Birds Agreement (CAMBA).
  • Vegetation resulting from the transition of a predominantly freshwater to marine system following the port of Lakes Entrance opening in the 1880s.
Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park lies to the south.
