Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands Ramsar Site

Victoria’a eleventh Ramsar Site, the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands, was designated on 29th August 2001.

The Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands are located in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs approximately 30 km from Melbourne. The site is comprised of two separate wetlands: Edithvale and Seaford.

The wetlands have particular value in that they are the last remaining representative examples of the Carrum Carrum Swamp which was largely drained in the nineteenth century.

Key features of the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands Ramsar Site include:
  • The site supports State-significant populations and foraging and potential breeding habitat for the threatened Australasian Bittern (Botaurus poiciloptilus).
  • The site regularly supports more than 1% of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway population of Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata).
  • A total of 41 significant plant taxa have been recorded for the Edithvale – Seaford Wetlands including Water Ribbons (Triglochin alcockiae). The Edithvale–Seaford Wetlands represents a significant extension to the known eastern limits of its range.
