Demographics

Demographic research aims to improve understanding of the main drivers of urban and regional change to underpin the planning of our cities, towns and regions. The Department of Planning and Community Development undertakes research and analysis to better inform decision makers and communities about key issues such as demography and land development.

Demographic Analysis

	Housing Decisions of Empty Nesters A report by Sweeney Research commissioned by the Department of Sustainability and Environment, to better understand the housing decisions of empty nesters.
	Mill Park Housing Choice Survey A study of the housing choices of people who live in a suburb that was developed a generation ago.
	From Doughnut City to Cafe Society A report and video released in 1998 examines population trends affecting Melbourne and analyses the changing factors which are driving those trends. Demographic Statistics

	Victoria in Future 2008 Population projections for Victoria and its local government areas published by DSE under the title of Victoria in Future 2008. They cover total populations, age structure and households, and extend to 2056 for Victoria, the metropolitan area and Regional Victoria. As well, they cover total population for all Victorian local government areas and dwelling data for metropolitan local government areas.
	Victorian Population Bulletin Provides a valuable snapshot of Estimated Resident Population (ERP), population change and the basic drivers behind that change, as publised by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

	Interstate Migration Special Bulletin 2006 (PDF - 637 Kb) Read about the latest trends in migration within Australia in this four page bulletin.
	Melbourne In Fact 2001 and Regional Victoria In Fact 2001 - A snapshot of variables from the 2001Census for Victorian Local Government Areas & for Australia, the States and Territories, and all capital cities. Data can be accessed in Know Your Area or hard copy can be purchased from Information Victoria.
	Towns in Time Time Series data for Census years from 1981 to 2001 for all Victorian towns over 200 people (at the 2001 Census).
	Suburbs in Time Time series data for Census years from 1981 to 1996 for Melbourne's suburbs. Information includes total population, age structure, marital status, household size and household type and a range of information about housing.
