Sustainability Analysis

The Sustainability Analysis team of the Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) undertakes research relating to the sustainability of urban living, with a focus on the interaction between built and natural environments. The team collates and analyses data from wide-ranging sources, provides advice on research methodology and builds the capacity of others to research sustainability issues.

Climate Change and Insurance
Insurance lessens the socio-economic impact of damage and loss, and is likely to play a significant part in how communities adapt to climate change. To kick-start thinking on spatial analysis of communities at risk of underinsurance, a background paper was prepared in September 2008 by a graduate on rotation to the Sustainability Analysis Unit. The paper outlines the current state of underinsurance, the problems that climate change poses for insurance (particularly house insurance) and some options for managing climate change risk.

Energy and Water End Use studies
Understanding how water and energy resources are used by consumers (end-users) is a critical step towards sustainable resource management and efficient infrastructure provision. DPCD commissioned Energy and Water Services to identify end-use studies currently available for the water and energy industries in Victoria, and to identify gaps in knowledge. Information was collected through telephone discussions and face-to-face interviews with a range of representatives from the water, gas and electricity sectors. The consultant’s final report was submitted in May 2008.

Southwest Sustainable Settlements Pilot Project
The
Southwest Sustainable Settlements Pilot Project was run in partnership with the Southwest Region of the Department of Sustainability and Environment. It aimed to foster improved reporting by relevant organisations on sustainability at the level of settlements (i.e. towns and cities) in the southwest region of Victoria.
