Youth Migration Study

For many regional students, undertaking university education means making a migration decision. Some move to Melbourne while others remain in, or move to, larger regional cities which have university campuses.

The Youth Migration Study commissioned by SAR aims to better understand the choices made by young adults as they make locational decisions to undertake university study. This information can help us better understand movement of young adults between regional Victoria and Melbourne.

There are two parts of the study.

Part one is based on focus groups of current students at wither Melbourne or regional campuses

The second part of the study involves a series of in-depth interviews with alumni of university, exploring the reasons for their migration decisions before and after university study.

The reports present findings from this research. These findings will enhance our knowledge of regional migration patterns and support the development of informed population projections. Beyond this, it is hoped that an understanding of the role that regional universities play in influencing young people’s migration decisions will be of broader interest to policy makers seeking to enhance the attractiveness of regional areas for investment and population growth.
