EPISODE 1 – How much water do fruit trees need after harvest?

The first episode in the FARMVIEW series, How much water do fruit trees need after harvest?, features Victorian orchardists who are trialling a range of different strategies to reduce irrigation after their fruit has been picked.

Working with the Department of Primary Industries in Tatura, these orchardists are investigating the best strategy for irrigating fruit trees after harvest in a series of trials to find a suitable economic and sustainable outcome to post harvest irrigation.

This episode outlines the progress of the trials and demonstrates how orchardists and the DPI are working together to combat drought, low water allocations and climate change.

EPISODE 2 - Post-frost management of grape vines

DPI’s Grape extension team recently finished work on a research project into post-frost management of grapes, in partnership with the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation and the University of Melbourne.

The research was followed by a series of seminars (filmed for this episode of FARMVIEW), featuring frost management experts Mike Traught and Sonja Needs, to share the findings on the best management options available to grape growers after frost.

EPISODE 4 – Managing Grapevine Phylloxera

Managing Grapevine Phylloxera" is the last in the first series of FARMVIEW productions. In this episode, FARMVIEW interviews DPI Plant Standards Officer Greg King in regards to Phylloxera protocols, compliance and rezoning projects within the state of Victoria. We also speak with Dr Kevin Powell, who leads the research into Phylloxera with the DPI, with his latest research specifically focusing on rootstock management and early detection diagnosis of Phylloxera.

Under the Future Farming Strategy, the DPI have announced funding of $3million over four years for a targeted program to improve biosecurity and market access for a number of Victoria's grape growing regions that currently have an unknown phylloxera status

EPISODE 5 – Understanding Smoke Effect on Wine Grape Quality

Smoke from bushfires and controlled burns can have a significant impact on wine quality.

Understanding the potential impacts of predicted changes in climate and the likelihood of bushfire events and the associated impact on the Australian grape and wine industry's quality and production has become a priority research focus for the Australian wine industry.

In this episode of FARMVIEW, we look at the collaborative research that is being undertaken across Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia to provide up to date information to grape growers, wineries and natural resource managers to mitigate the negative effects of bushfire and controlled burn smoke on grape and wine quality.

EPISODE 6 – Wine Grape Tannin Research Project

Tannin is one of a number of compounds that contributes to the sensory characteristics of wine including mouth feel and astringency in wine. Studies have shown that being able to quantify and predict compounds such as anthocyanin content and tannin composition prior to harvest may develop an understanding of how this translates into the completed wine and its final quality.

Episode 6 of the Farmview series showcase's The Wine Grape Tannin Research Project. An industry funded project that is being undertaken by Mark Downey and his team at DPI Mildura that aims to develop robust methods of measuring tannins pre harvest and to investigate the viticultural, environmental and varietal factors that affect tannin content and composition in Australia’s premium wine grape varieties.

Industry involvement in the research is important to the outcomes of understanding the effect of tannin variability in wine grapes.
